The optical sensor is placed on the helmet's front, gently touching your forehead. The sensor samples the blood pulse in a high frequency and transmits a raw signal to the processing unit, which is placed in the helmet's back.

SMART is the world’s first cycling helmet that continuously measures your heart rate, eliminating the need to wear a chest strap. Designed for use during active sports, our sensors are embedded in the helmet and transmit accurate, real time heart rate information to your sport watch, cycling computer and smartphone, while simultaneously updating all of your fitness applications.
LifeBEAM's unique combination of sensors, proprietary algorithms and distinctive mechanical solutions accurately measures and transmits heart rate information in a non-invasive, comfortable manner. Using the same optical sensors used in common medical applications, LifeBEAM technology reads pulse signals directly from your forehead as you ride. Two light beams are transmitted to the skin and the reflection is measured in an electro-optical cell. This allows us to monitor changes in blood flow and extract heart rate information. A 3D accelerometer measures changes in direction and velocity -- acceleration. Our state of the art algorithms then remove the ‘motion-generated noise,’ process all of the data in real time and send accurate heart rate numbers directly to your mobile device.
Our technology is an advanced variation of common optical sensors. Two light beams are transmitted to the skin and their reflection is measured in an electro-optical cell. This allows us to monitor changes in blood flow and extract heart rate information. Therefore, blocking the light beam with any kind of cloth will prevent this action. The sensor is located on the helmet's front, gently touching the upper part of the forehead. As long as the cap doesn't block the sensor or isn't under the hairline, you're good to go.
We provide SMART Cycling Helmets in medium (~50-56cm) and large (~57-61cm) sizes. You may notice that these sizes are a bit smaller than the standard sizes that Lazer provides to their customers. This is because the sensor takes up some room. The weight of the helmet itself is 280g (M); the LifeBEAM physiological sensor & processing unit adds only 35g.
The iPhone 4S, 5, or 5S models all have Bluetooth Low Energy, so they will be able to connect with the SMART Helmet. Unfortunately, the iPhone 4 and previous models will not.

The battery life is at least 15 hours of continuous usage. The system will switch to idle mode if not used for more than 3 minutes, in order to extend the battery life.
Our sensing platform requires a unique mechanical solution in order to provide you with a continuous & accurate heart rate reading. Currently we have embedded it in Lazer’s GENESIS helmet.

You will receive a continuous real-time measurement of your heart rate and any other heart rate feature provided by your display device or app, including average heart rate, maximum heart rate, etc.
Power meters are essential. However, they only demonstrate the work you're doing. Your heart rate is your body's response to that work. For example: accurate heart rate monitoring can provide real time feedback on whether you should continue with your workout. If you have recovered from the prior day's work out, your heart rate will increase as you begin an interval. If your heart rate is slow to rise and remains elevated longer than normal in your recovery period, you're probably better off postponing a hard session for another day.

Extracting heart rate information from the forehead in extreme conditions is extremely complicated, and it took a few years of monitoring pilots and astronauts until we figured out how to do it.
